Brian Whitby

Brian's earliest recollection of drumming is banging on biscuit tins with his mum's knitting needles at aged eight (….and his drums still sound like old biscuit tins! love from Pete the guitarist). At age sixteen he got his first proper kit, a black Premier Olympic, which featured in his debut public performance with the psychedelic band "Pneumatic Toadstool" at his end-of-term school disco. For the last thirty years Brian has been trying to live that down ! ……performing with a variety of bands and one-night-stands spanning every musical style from heavy rock to (dare we say it !) Country and Western. Career highlights so far include jamming with Roger Chapman (of 70s band "Family" fame), and sharing a stage on a number of occasions with local guitar hero Geoff Whitehorn (formerly of "Bad Company", "The Who", etc etc).

Whilst recognised as a versatile drummer, Brian is predominantly a rock fan, who cites his favourite bands as "The Who", "Led Zeppelin", "Thin Lizzy", Deep Purple", "The Darkness" etc. His key drumming influences include Ian Paice, John Bonham, and of course the legendary Keith Moon (Brian says "it's such a travesty he's better known for driving cars into swimming pools than his unique drumming style !!!"). These influences can clearly be heard in Brian's solo during the "Golden Earring" classic "Radar Love", one of the highlights of the Wasted Aces set.

Brian's current kit comprises Pearl bass drum/tom-toms with assorted hardware, Rogers/Ludwig snares, and Paiste cymbals. Batter heads are predominately Evans G2 coated, but Brian admits he is still searching for that elusive perfect blend of response and durability.
